Oscars 2021: Who Should Win Every Award (And Who Actually Will)
6. Best Original Screenplay
Nominees
Judas and the Black Messiah (Will Berson and Shaka King)
Minari (Lee Isaac Chung)
Promising Young Woman (Emerald Fennell)
Sound of Metal (Darius Marder and Abraham Marder)
The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Aaron Sorkin)
Who Should Win: Sound of Metal
Save only for Minari, Sound of Metal is one of the more restrained Original Screenplay nominees this year, but through its heart-rending character interactions and unique perspective, truly does feel more original than anything else here.
Who Will Win: Promising Young Woman
Emerald Fennell's script may feel occasionally too heavy-handed for its own good and probably should've ended five minutes earlier, but it's still a gloriously entertaining takedown of rape culture and toxic masculinity, mining well-wrought characters and depressingly relatable drama for every discomforting drop.
Fennell won the Writers Guild of America award, so she's probably got this sewn up.
