It barely feels like the Oscars have been over for five minutes, and yet, we're already more than half-way towards 2022's ceremony, which will take place on March 27 of next year.

As anyone who knows anything about the Academy Awards will attest, who is a frontrunner to win or a "lock" for a nomination can change abruptly in the months leading up to the big show, though it's already easy to see the Oscar picture beginning to take shape.

There's no question that we'll see a heap of Oscar-friendly veterans receive nominations once again, but the importance of the Oscars really lies in the career-expanding opportunities it can grant those never nominated before.

An Oscar nomination alone means actors will forever have "Academy Award nominee..." placed before their name in trailers, and it of course provides a massive boost to their general profile and asking price. The nomination is the win, as they say.

And so, while we've still got many, many months until the nominees are announced, these 20 performers are all firmly in the mix to receive their first Oscar nominations next year.

Keep your fingers crossed for your personal faves, because none of these 20 are outside the realm of possibility...

20. Jodie Comer - The Last Duel

Ridley Scott's new historical epic The Last Duel is jam-packed with quality performances, though none better than Jodie Comer, who brings righteous fury to the role of rape victim Marguerite de Carrouges.

The genius of the film's Rashomon-structure means that Marguerite is more of a passive figure in the first two acts, as we observe her actions through the eyes of her husband Sir Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) and her alleged rapist, Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver).

But the third act shifts to show the perspective also implied to be true - Marguerite's. At this point rising star Comer is given the floor to deliver a powerful acting masterclass capturing the anguish of a woman fighting to have her accusations taken seriously amid a toxic patriarchy.

She's easily the strongest part of the ensemble, brilliantly skewering the convention of the stereotypically passive screen wife.

Audiences and critics alike love her, and respect for the film is high despite its weak box office, so don't be shocked if Comer racks up her first Best Actress nod as a result.
