It's no secret that the short film categories are the toughest to predict given the lack of precursor awards on the circuit.
In Animated Short, Disney's Us Again, Netflix's Robin Robin, and The New Yorker's Step into the River are easy picks through sheer visibility alone, while there's a lot of (admittedly anecdotal) chatter online for Only A Child and The Windshield Wiper.
For Documentary Short, Netflix's Three Songs for Benazir, The New York Times' The Queen of Basketball, and veteran doc filmmaker Laura Poitras' Terror Contagion all feel like solid bets, while MTV's Coded: The Hidden Love of J.C. Leyendecker and When We Were Bullies have been generating a lot of positive buzz.
And finally for Live-Action Short, the Riz Ahmed-starring The Long Goodbye is a guaranteed nod, while the Gus Van Sant-produced Censor of Dreams has a strong shot, and the hot button appeal of Frimas, Tala'vision, and When the Sun Sets could serve them well.
Again, though, these categories are like throwing darts at a dartboard blindfolded, so don't be shocked if these picks are only half-right at best.
