Pacific Rim: Uprising Review - 3 Ups & 7 Downs

Ups...

3. John Boyega's Charismatic Performance

Pacific Rim Uprising John Boyega
Universal Pictures

John Boyega was perfectly cast as the son of Idris Elba's ridiculously-named Stacker Pentecost from the first film, and he delivers every bit the charismatic, charming performance you'd both expect and hope for.

What's surprising here is that Jake is actually more of a cocky a**hole than you might be anticipating, and like he tells the audience mere moments into the film, he is not his father.

Boyega doesn't get particularly great material to work with, but he makes the best of it and again proves he's got a sure, unmistakably magnetic star power. Scoring the role of Finn in Star Wars sure wasn't a fluke.
