Potentially Seen In: Independence Day: Resurgence, Star Trek Beyond, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Passengers 2015 was a fairly uneven year for the whole of science-fiction. For every Ex Machina, there was a Terminator Genisys, for every Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there was a Jupiter Ascending. Its natural for this range of success to exist when so many films are released in the same genre, and even if there was a lot of stinkers, some of the years absolute best films were science-fiction. This year offers up a similar slate of sci-fi fare, from massive blockbusters to smaller personal dramas. Some will hit and some will miss, but look for 2016 to have a few elite-level hits that live up to 2015. For instance, theres no reason to believe that Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrences space-set romance couldnt capture audiences like The Martian did this year. The real test will be if the genres blockbuster fare, like sequels to Independence Day and Star Trek, as well as the hotly-anticipated Star Wars spinoff Rogue One, can succeed in ways that bombs like Tomorrowland and Chappie couldnt.
