Ranking December 2015's Movies From Worst To Best

9. Macbeth

RottenTomatoes Score: 79% (7.3) Box Office: The $15-20 million Shakespeare adaptation was no doubt hoping to be an indie smash given the awards buzz and presences of stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, yet as with recent box office dud Steve Jobs, Fassbender seems to fail to connect with a wide audience. With just $9.4 million grossed worldwide and few countries left to receive it, it's a surprising and undeserved flop. Verdict: Justin Kurzel's (The Snowtown Murders) adaptation of The Bard's classic tale is the most visceral and visually stunning take to date, finding winning performances from Fassbender and Cotillard (alongside a crackerjack supporting cast), even if Kurzel is the real MVP here with terrific cinematographer Adam Arkapaw. Through rich, colourful visuals and plentiful slow-motion, the pair realise Hells both literal and existential, and even though some of the accents aren't so easy to understand, the overall narrative heft of Macbeth is only amplified by this powerful, red-blooded effort.
