RottenTomatoes Score: 76% (7.5) Box Office: With a $44 million price-tag, Tarantino's latest is a modestly-budgeted affair compared to Django Unchained ($100 million) and Inglourious Basterds ($71 million), and the box office will likely reflect this. It performed well during its limited 70mm run over Christmas, and will unquestionably make its budget back many times over during the month of January. Verdict: Quentin Tarantino's 8th film sure isn't his best, but even lower-end QT is still usually a great film. While without question his most self-indulgent and overlong film to date, The Hateful Eight still makes great use of a terrific ensemble, mixing all the mystery of an Agatha Christie novel with brutal bloodshed and that delicious 70mm cinematography. There's no shame in falling second, third, or even sixth fiddle to a movie like Pulp Fiction: it's a weaker Tarantino effort if still ludicrously entertaining by any other metric. The prohibitive run-time means you'll probably only want to watch it occasionally, though.
