3. Son Of Saul
RottenTomatoes Score: 93% (8.5) Box Office: Budgeted at a mere $1 million, the Hungarian Holocaust drama has very nearly made its small price tag back at the limited box office, and with a few countries still left to receive the film, not to mention the inevitable Oscar buzz to follow, it won't be a major hit by any means, but it'll prove profitable. Verdict: Hungary's submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar has been buzzed about ever since it premiered at least year's Cannes Film Festival to rapturous reviews, and what a jaw-dropping debut it is for writer-director László Nemes. Nemes and cinematographer Mátyás Erdély shoot their Holocaust film through a small number of devastating long takes, but it's the performance of lead actor Géza Röhrig that really hammers home the brutality of Auschwitz. Yes, it doesn't really say anything we don't already know, but it's conveyed in an unconventional manner that's near-impossible to forget.
