Considering how poor Quantum Of Solace was, Skyfall had no right to make as much money as it did - or to be as brilliant as it is, for that matter.

But Sam Mendes proved to be the perfect tonic for the Bond franchise, bringing in an affectionate commitment to nostalgia as well as his usual keen eye for story-telling to pick away at what it means for James Bond to be 007 more than any other film in the series before it.

There's a very good case for Skyfall being the best Bond ever, which is a little odd given how well it works quite apart from the rest of the series. But it's the links to the traditins of Bond that really work: Mendes adds back some humour, focuses the action and has a villain who feels as large as those from the days before Timothy Dalton.
