It may now be all too fashionable to poke fun at The Return Of The King's inability to finish properly (and it's god-awful slow motion scenes right at the end), but everything before that is a heart-stomping culmination of Peter Jackson's incredibly trilogy.

The performances of the primary cast are mostly at their best, the effects work is stunning and Jackson's eye for large scale spectacle is just completely unprecedented. His battle scenes are still some of the most breath-taking sequences ever committed to film, and the perfect realisation of what Tolkein wrote on the page.

The self-congratulation of the ending sequences is a little jarring now, but The Return Of The King is definitely one of the best trilogy ending films of all time.
