3. The Freeway Accident (Final Destination 2)

The second film features without question the strongest premonition sequence in the series, depicting a relentlessly brutal car pileup which straddles a fine line between vaguely plausible and just ridiculous enough.

It's a high-energy orgy of violence as the principal characters are largely barbecued in a chain reaction of explosions, while the easy highlights include Eugene being impaled by his own motorcycle, and Tom getting his head hollowed out by a errant log.

If the scene had any true impact on society, it was making anyone who saw the movie genuinely nervous around logging trucks on the motorway.

2. Tanning Bed Disaster (Ashley Freund & Ashlyn Halperin - Final Destination 3)

Perhaps the most disturbing deaths in the entire series are those of Ashley (Chelan Simmons) and Ashlyn (Crystal Lowe), who are cooked to death inside their tanning beds in the third movie.

As if the horrifying focus on their suffering as they helplessly burned to death wasn't bad enough, an early portion of the scene is scored to Ohio Players' "Love Rollercoaster," nodding to the opening catastrophe and also lending the scene an uncomfortably playful tenor.
