Ranking Every Live-Action Catwoman From Worst To Best

1. Michelle Pfeiffer - Batman Returns

Every Catwoman
Warner Bros.

The only live-action interpretation of Catwoman that has managed to surpass the iconic original is the version played by Michelle Pfeiffer in 1992's Batman Returns.

Pfeiffer's Catwoman is one that just succeeds on numerous different levels. First and foremost, she is a bonafide main character in this film who plays a crucial, omnipresent role (unlike some of the television versions, where she's mostly just part of the crowd.) Plus, she has a complete and compelling character arc (unlike Hathaway) and is incredibly well-written (unlike Berry.) It's the only time we've been given a proper Catwoman story on a theatrical level (as opposed to Gotham's TV one.)

This version is true to the characters origins, with all of her famous cat-like mannerisms and habits as a thief being intact. All the while, this version of Catwoman is also a genuinely unique one, with a modified backstory, as well as a wildly entertaining unhinged personality and a brand-new outfit that befit Tim Burton's Batman universe perfectly.

Finally, Michelle Pfeiffer is absolutely brilliant in this role, throwing her all into the performance in a successful effort to bring this new version of the iconic Selina Kyle to life. She wasn't the first, nor the last to play the character, but Pfeiffer will always represent Catwoman at her very best and it's an absolute shame that her solo film never came to fruition.
