Ranking Every Richard Linklater Film Worst To Best
9. A Scanner Darkly (2006)
Philip K. Dick is a science-fiction writer whose works have inspired numerous classic movies, including Blade Runner and Minority Report. A Scanner Darkly is based on the author's semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, and follows an undercover government operative (Keanu Reeves) as he tries to uncover the drug network that has infected America.
With its slick and stylish animation and the performances of Reeves, Robert Downey Jr, Woody Harrelson and Winona Ryder, A Scanner Darkly makes for a dark, twisted tale into the war on drugs and political instability.
Though this experiment in animation could have ended poorly for Linklater, the film's trippy tone, intelligence and bizarre plot-twists makes it one of the director's most unique and must-watch efforts. Some critics have pointed out in the past that the film is more of an "experience" than anything else, but when the experience is this good, the film's smallest faults can easily be forgiven.
