Ranking January 2017's Movies From Worst To Best
7. Lion
RottenTomatoes Score: 88% (7.3/10)
Box Office: The $12 million Best Picture Oscar nominee has pulled in almost three-times its budget to date. Not quite the runaway hit TWC were probably hoping for, but certainly not bad either.
Verdict: Though its litany of Oscar nominations are a little questionable (especially Nicole Kidman's), Lion is on its own merits an affecting true story, brought powerfully to the screen thanks to a tight ensemble cast, and director Garth Davis smartly not rushing through the movie's prologue just to get Dev Patel on screen (he actually doesn't appear until around the hour mark).
It's hard not to be moved by Saroo Brierley's attempt to locate his estranged birth mother, even if the Academy has probably blown its esteem a little out of proportion.
