Box Office: Christian Bale's new western has grossed around one-third of its $50 million budget so far, and isn't likely to get anywhere close to reaching the full figure, even with its recent wide roll-out in the U.S.

Verdict: The latest film from writer-director Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Black Mass) is not easy to like, what with its slow pace, often unsympathetic lead character and frequently brutal violence.

However, those who stick with Hostiles may find that it reveals itself to possess an intoxicating quality that's hard to look away from.

The beautiful cinematography and Bale's searing, powerhouse performance keep the film alive even in its slower, quieter moments, and while certainly not for everyone, those who like their westerns moody and methodical just might love it.
