Ranking July 2017's Movies From Worst To Best
9. The Beguiled
RottenTomatoes Score: 78% (7.1/10)
Box Office: Sofia Coppola's period thriller cost a mere $10 million, and has just barely managed to reap it back. It's totally a VOD movie, though, so it'll do just fine in the long run.
Verdict: Coppola's slow-burn directorial style lends itself extremely well to Thomas P. Cullinan's novel, creating an intoxicating air of dread that gives Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning plenty to work with, even in the movie's frequent silent sections.
As a quietly devastating examination of the lesser instincts of men and women, this is sharply-calibrated work, and one of Coppola's most intriguing efforts to date.
