Ranking March 2017's Movies From Worst To Best

12. Life

Life Rebecca Ferguson
Columbia Pictures

RottenTomatoes Score: 67% (5.9/10)

Box Office: Made for an impressively low $58 million considering the high concept and A-list cast, Life is nevertheless a few million short of recovering its costs after two weekends on release. The fact that most reviews weren't effusively positive may have turned off notoriously picky sci-fi fans, who will probably wait to see it at home.

Verdict: Daniel Espinosa's tense direction combines with a terrific cast to make Life a familiar but entertaining sci-fi horror flick, lifting liberally from Ridley Scott's Alien but at least bringing a few of its own ideas to the table.

No, it's not the Venom origin story comic book fans desperately wanted it to be, but it is a well-calibrated effort that's enormously suspenseful and, at just 103 minutes, not a moment too long.

Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes). General video game, TV and film nut. Occasional sports fan. Full time loon.
