Ranking March 2019's Movies From Worst To Best
8. At Eternity's Gate
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 79% (7.18/10)
Box Office: This Oscar-nominated Willem Dafoe-starring biopic clearly didn't cost much, but its $8.4 million worldwide total won't be making anyone rich. It's absolutely the type of film that'll perform much better on home video (especially with older audiences), though.
Verdict: Fundamentally a "not for everyone" movie, this Vincent van Gogh biopic requires audiences to contend with both Willem Dafoe's accelerated age - he's more than 25 years older now than the painter ever lived to be - and Julian Schnabel's (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) sometimes distracting directorial flourishes.
But Dafoe is so damn great in the movie that he's able to convince as van Gogh regardless, his lack of an accent be-damned. If you're at all interested in the artist's life, this is absolutely a must-see, though it'll probably do little to convince broader audiences.
It wouldn't be nearly as good with another actor in the central role, but as a drama that skirts many of the usual biopic cliches, it is alluring and memorable in its own way.
