Ranking May 2018's Movies From Worst To Best
8. Solo: A Star Wars Story
RottenTomatoes Score: 71% (6.4/10)
Box Office: Sure to be one of the most fascinating box office stories of recent years, Solo's well-documented production troubles pushed the budget up to almost $300 million, meaning it needs to gross around $600 million to be profitable.
Due to a multitude of factors - huge competition, lack of interest, solid but hardly glowing reviews, The Last Jedi backlash - Solo colossally underperformed in its opening weekend, grossing just $103 million over the four-day weekend.
Simply, it's going to struggle to crack more than $400 million when it's all said and done, an almost unthinkably embarrassing result for a Star Wars film. Ouch.
Verdict: Neither as bad as you feared nor as good as you hoped, Solo is an entertaining if totally inessentialy Star Wars film, serving up fan service and entertaining action by the bucketload...and not much else.
The performances from Alden Ehrenreich and Emilia Clarke are decidedly stronger than expected, and there are a few fun surprises, but largely Solo is an utterly workmanlike, disappointingly by-the-numbers entry into the franchise.
