Ranking The A Nightmare On Elm Street Films From Worst To Best
4. Wes Craven's New Nightmare
Wes Craven's first foray into meta-horror resulted in a much more sophisticated take on the material that paved the way for the likes of Scream and numerous other imitators, but none of them are quite as unique and downright bizarre as New Nightmare.
After the absolute disaster that was Freddy's Dead, the producers knew they'd need to go back to the drawing board if they ever wanted to make Freddy a viable threat at the box-office once again, and Wes Craven had the perfect idea.
Set amongst the pre-production of a new Nightmare movie, this film sees original heroine Heather Langenkamp return as herself, battling an ancient evil in the form of Freddy, prompting her to play Nancy one last time to end the nightmares once and for all.
This one's a little light on the horror, but more than makes up for it with stunning character work and one of Robert Englund's finest hours as Freddy. The more fairytale-esque approach to the material may not be to everyone's liking, but New Nightmare is undeniably a well-crafted horror film that, much like the original, was very forward-thinking in its ideas and approach to the subject matter.
