Re-Casting The Lord Of The Rings Movies If They Came Out Today

11. Denethor - James Earl Jones

Lord Of The Rings
Paramount Pictures

Chances are, even if you've not seen any of Jones' performances, you've certainly heard them.

As the voice of both Darth Vader and Mufasa, James Earl Jones has gravitas and charisma to spare. Exactly what you want from a politicking steward. While Jones is no stranger to playing powerful figures, his most famous roles have been either authoritative or just downright authoritarian, meaning there's not a lot of chances for him to show instability or doubt. As the stir crazy steward of Gondor, we'd get to see a different, power hungry performance than the one audiences know him best for.

While the original actor, John Noble, seethed insanity and malice from the first scene, it would be fascinating to see a more book-faithful version of Denethor, who's a lot wilier and more cunning when dealing with the likes of Aragorn and Gandalf. And with Jones' calm, warming baritone, this should be no tall order for the veteran actor. He'd even get to sit down for most of his scenes. Result.

He'd also be a cracking dub for Sauron in the tv show. "I find my lack of fingers disturbing..."
