Ash is the new sci-fi horror film from singular director Flying Lotus (Kuso), and even those critics who had positive things to say about it couldn't help but mention how blatantly the film is a mash-up of several vastly superior horror films - namely The Thing, Alien, and Event Horizon.
And so, while Ash is a visually stunning, enticingly grisly 95-minute ride topped by a solid lead performance from Eiza González and a killer score from Flying Lotus himself, there's precious little meat to be found on its bones.
Its narrative trajectory is also insanely predictable from start to finish, so if you thought you had it pegged from the trailers, you almost certainly did.
Once you know what Ash is about, where it's going, and have enjoyed it as the shameless sci-fi horror grab-bag it undeniably is, there's not much reason at all to go back for seconds.
