1. Alien
What more can be said about Scott's ground-breaking sci-fi masterpiece that already hasn't? A marvel of slow-building suspense, Alien dares to take its time creating an atmosphere of dread before unleashing the iconic Xenomorph on the crew of the Nostromo. Scott shows enormous restraint here, directing the horror film with an art-house eye and providing only fleeting glimpses of the monster stalking the crew. The cinematography, effects, musical score, editing, direction and acting are all sublime, with Sigourney Weaver's unforgettable lead performance earning her a place in the pantheon of legendary screen heroines (which would result in her receiving a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her work on the sequel, Aliens). James Cameron's follow-up may arguably be the superior action film, but as an exercise in isolated anxiety, Alien has practically no equal in the genre. It's Scott's best film and almost certainly always will be, because how exactly would you even try to compete with this? How would you rank Ridley Scott's movies to date? Shout it out in the comments!
