5. Saw III - Jeff's Game

Game: Jeff (Angus Macfadyen), who's become vengeful after his son was run over, goes through a series of games designed to teach him to forgive. Unknown to him, his estranged wife Lynn (Bahar Soomekh) has also been kidnapped and is being forced to keep the seriously ill Jigsaw alive. If Jigsaw's heart monitor flatlines, the explosive collar around Lynn's neck will detonate.

This one's a mixed bag, although the pros slightly outweigh the cons. Much like with Rigg in Saw IV, Jeff didn't deserve this - he had gone through a truly horrific bereavement.

Additionally, this game is violent even for Saw, and it can be pretty grim to watch. Still, despite these flaws, it is a bluntly effective and consistently suspenseful watch that'll mostly keep viewers engaged.

It's actually the scenes with Lynn, Amanda and Jigsaw which work best. It's later revealed that Jigsaw was testing Amanda, who'd become unstable and vengeful, to see if she would show Lynn mercy; this is a test she ultimately fails. This storyline showcases the strongest writing of the film and features a cracking performance from Shawnee Smith, so this raises the game up quite a bit.

The ending to this game is bloody awful though. Jeff, apparently having learned nothing whatsoever, refuses to forgive Jigsaw and kills him, thus killing Lynn too. This makes the whole game feel pointless, and killing off Jigsaw and Amanda so early was a mistake that haunted all the subsequent Saw movies.
