Scariest Movie Moments #24 – FINAL DESTINATION 3 – ‘Tanning Booth’

A standout moment in a fairly average sequel comes near the beginning of this film during a graphic and disturbing death scene involving a couple of tanning booths. The sequence is quite clever in its orchestration. Two ditzy and distinctly unlikable though admittedly highly attractive young women lye down getting their tans whilst singing along to the music playing from their earphones. Hence they are shut off both visually and audibly from the outside world and so their sense of isolation is immediately escalated. Then as the camera focuses on the outside the device of dramatic irony is used to chilling effect as we observe the temperature gradually starting to increase. This sense of empowerment of enabling the audience to be aware of a key plot detail to which the characters themselves are completely oblivious heightens the suspense and deepens our sense of empathy in anticipation of their harsh fate. What follows next is the transition from the girls joyous reaction to the heat to the moment when they start to think that something is wrong and then the all out terror when they realise that they are locked in their booths and begin to pound on the locked walls. This skillful exercise in pacing and execution makes this sequence so strong and provides one of the best modern examples of how to artistically handle a grisly death scenario.
