There are few more infamously terrifying moments in "family-friendly" films than the boat ride scene from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, where Wonka (Gene Wilder) takes the group on a ride through a dark tunnel.

Inside they're flashed with kaleidoscopic lights and shown trippy imagery of insects and distorted faces, all while Wonka recites an increasingly unhinged, ominous poem before finally screeching loudly, much to the group's abject terror.

It's a sequence that feels tonally out of step with the rest of the movie up that point, which combined with Gene Wilder's superbly deranged performance is precisely why it remains so damn effective over 50 years later.

Though the boat ride scene is featured in Roald Dahl's original novel, it's considerably tamer, and here's another fun fact - the cast weren't told what Gene Wilder would do during the scene, and so their shaken reactions are largely genuine.
