Scream Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

1. The Fan Service (Mostly) Works

It's a Scream movie so of course it's hilariously aware of itself and its own legacy, but the new film's relentless mockery of nostalgia-bait sequels ensures it also ends up delivering its own fair share of fan service.

While there are certainly times where the homages to previous death scenes or set-pieces feel a little excessive or pandering, for the most part fans are likely to feel appropriately served by the many nods and tributes to what came before.

Beyond its narrative, this thing is also packed with Easter eggs, many of which surely won't be spotted until the VOD release.

Overall there's just a lot of love for the previous films in Scream's script and visuals, yet in a way that makes sense while not taking itself too seriously or holding itself with the bizarre excessive sentiment of, say, Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
