Chris Stuckman's feature debut Shelby Oaks was a wildly uneven affair that just went wildly off the rails at the end.

The story follows Mia (Camille Sullivan), a woman who is desperate to track down her sister Riley (Sarah Durn), a paranormal investigator who vanished in the eerie, abandoned town of Shelby Oaks.

In the final reel, Mia indeed locates Riley, who has been chained up in the basement of people who follow the incubus Tarion, having been forcibly impregnated with a baby she recently gave birth to.

While we as audience members might assume that the film will end with Mia rescuing Riley, that's not quite it. Though she does get Riley and her unwanted son to apparent safety, a traumatised Riley then attempts to smother the baby, believing it to be possessed.

This prompts Mia to instinctively intervene, accidentally pushing Riley out of a nearby window, where she's preyed upon and devoured by a pack of hellhounds. Mia is now left to care for the baby, as is implied to have been Tarion's twisted plan all along.

There's nothing wrong with a downbeat ending, but Riley's demise is so outrageously sudden and cartoonishly violent that it gets dangerously close to unintentional comedy territory.
