Spider-Man: Far From Home - Mysterio's Doctor Strange Link EXPLAINED

1. The Relic

When you watch the Far From Home trailer back again, there's something awfully familiar looking about the green light projections Mysterio seems to be firing at the Elemental monster in Venice. As well as firing "conventional" green energy blasts, Mysterio seems to be conjuring something like the magical symbols used by Doctor Strange, the Ancient One and other sorcerors...

In actual fact, what he appears to be conjuring is the Eye Of Providence - the eye within a triangle symbol used to represent the eye of God watching over all mankind that is traditionally associated with the Free Masons and the Illuminati, if you butter your bread that side up.

There is, of course, the possibility that Mysterio has seen Doctor Strange in action and knows to project fake symbols to look legitimate, which might explain why he'd use something like the Eye Of Providence (a gag designed to show that he's not quite as smart as he thinks, perhaps?), but that depends on too much. He'd have to have seen Strange's magic (or that of another sorceror), for a start, which is easier said than done since they're a clandestine organisation designed to live in shadow.

The only time he could perhaps have witnessed Strange's powers was in New York during the first invasion of the Black Order during Infinity War, but if those events are wiped out by time travel in Avengers: Endgame, he'd never have been able to witness it at all.

More likely is that he's exhibiting legitimate magical powers. Which can only be possible one way. The same way Doctor Strange's powers are possible. Mysterio is a trained Sorceror and not only that, but he's also wearing a relic, the same way Doctor Strange wears the Cloak Of Levitation as his.

Only a true sorceror could wear a relic, so it's not as if Mysterio could have stolen one. A relic chooses the sorceror, after all. So his path must have started with good intentions and been turned to a darker way in his pursuit of fame and notoriety. It wouldn't be the first time a sorceror lost his way...

So what relic could he be wearing? Well, that armour he wears seems curiously dated for someone seeking to announce himself as a new superhero and it sticks out as markedly different from the supervillain tech we saw in Homecoming. The design looks more mystical, more ancient and that could be the film's means for explaining why he dresses so strangely.

In Doctor Strange, we were introduced to the Wand Of Watoomb, the Orb of Agamotto, the Cloak, the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak, the Eye of Agamotto, the Staff of the Living Tribunal and the Vaulting Boots of Valtorr among others. What's to say there aren't other lost relics, including the chest-plate and amulets Mysterio wears?

This might all explain why Doctor Strange has long been rumoured as appearing in Far From Home too. There are scenes set in London, as confirmed by Kevin Feige, and while the Marvel boss has denied a Strange cameo, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that another MCU character would appear in Far From Home on the scale of Robert Downey Jr.

Since Happy Hogan definitely isn't up there with Iron Man and Spider-Man heading to Europe probably means there has to be a European link, it's hard not to be suspect of Feige's claims and expect Strange to be the one to cameo. Him turning up to remove the relics from Mysterio to protect the secrets of the Sorcerors definitely fits, particularly when Doctor Strange 2 will presumably continue to focus on the abuses of Sorcerors, since Mordo's whole arc is going to be focused on cleaning up after them and wiping them out...

It's all very compelling when you think about it.
