Spider-Man: Far From Home Trailer 2 Review: 5 Ups & 4 Downs
3. Hey, Don't Cheapen Spider-Man Like That!
Whenever a solo superhero movie comes out after an ensemble, there's always going to have to be an explanation for why the solo hero doesn't simply get in touch with his new super pals to come and sort out whatever the tension is in his own movie. Spider-Man: Homecoming got around this by having Spider-Man deal with supposedly lower level crime (which turned out to have wider ramifications) and keeping to a more personal story bent.
In Far From Home, the story is bigger and the scope broader, so the key will be how the script establishes why Spider-Man is operating alone. Given his heartbreak at Tony's death in Endgame, they could easily have gone that sort of way. What feels a lot cheaper is the fact that this trailer suggests it's only his story because he's available.
In an attempt to explain why Nick Fury didn't just go to Thor or Captain Marvel, Peter effectively cheapens himself, with the suggestion that he wouldn't even be living this movie if Thor wasn't off having another space adventure or Captain Marvel wasn't still on her part-time hero schedule.
Let's hope there is a genuine reason why it's him beyond that in the actual film.
