14. MJ Isn't Quite Who You Think She Is

One of the movie's biggest pre-release stories was the identity of Zendaya's Michelle, who many rightly theorised to be a fresh spin on the "MJ" character. With her full name being Michelle Jones, it seems that the MCU is making an active effort to distance itself from the well-worn Mary Jane Watson moniker, perhaps in an effort to make Zendaya's sarcastic, cynical portrayal stand far apart from Kirsten Dunst's performance.

It's entirely possible this was just a fun little rib for fans, much like the "Robin" moment in The Dark Knight Rises, and Michelle won't ever become an actual love interest for Peter, but given the strong reception to this iteration of the character and the potential to smartly subvert the typical Peter-MJ relationship, it'd probably be a mistake not to exploit it.

The MCU typically doesn't do romance very well, but shot through the prism of a John Hughes-inspired high school movie, it could really work, especially as the two actors clearly have solid chemistry. Either way, she's clearly coming back, and the smart money's on her having a significantly expanded role next time.
