9. Too Many Characters

In the initial stages of Homecoming's development, it was quite remarkable to watch the cast list grow. It felt like every week a new, recognisable face was joining the project, and it built up a sprawling cast of both adults and teens alike.

Some reviews note that many of them get their moments, either big or small, with The Guardian writing: "There are small but memorable roles handed to talented breakouts, while Parker’s inner circle is stacked with charm from Harrier, sidekick wit from Batalon and scene-stealing snark from Zendaya. There are brief comic cameos from Donald Glover and Hannibal Buress, [and] the forever underused Tomei is given room to make an impression."

For some, however, this isn't a good thing, as it means those characters all get in the way of each other, as ScreenCrush write:

"If Spider-Man: Homecoming commits one major sin it’s overcrowding... The problem isn’t that any of these characters are bad; the problem is most of them are terrific and Homecoming, which runs a brisk 133 minutes, doesn’t have enough room for all of them."

That's echoed in a few other reviews too, with Forbes and IndieWire both commenting on the cast's talent, but not been given enough time. The former highlight Marisa Tomei's Aunt May as one example, the latter the supposedly scene-stealing Zendaya, whose comic talent goes "wasted".
