One of the major criticisms I’ve heard of the film has been that Idris Elba’s villain Krall is rather one-note and takes a backseat to all that group bantering. And to that all I can say is "Really?"

Now I can’t really go too much into this one as it’s linked into later reveals (and, on that note, try and avoid the recent TV spots), but I’d say Krall's the most interesting bad guys of the reboot run. He’s got a long-standing plan more logical than Nero’s, is less gimmicky than John Harrison and not as snarling as Peter Weller. Most importantly, you understand what his motivations are and why he's dealing with them in this way.

The criticisms may come from the fact he’s not on screen as much as the heroes, but his character looms over everything and ties directly into the movie’s wider themes that it doesn't really matter.
