Star Trek Beyond Review: 8 Ups And 2 Downs
4. The Music
Music has been a bit of stickler for Star Trek Beyond. The first trailer was for scored to Beastie Boys’ Sabotage in an attempt to mimic Guardians Of The Galaxy and the third had Rhianna’s exhausting tie-in song.
Now here’s the surprise - the movie’s soundtrack is actually great. I mean, it is Michael Giaccino, so what did you expect, but still a nice surprise, like the rest of the film it has a great mix of throwback and new. It’s all very evocative of the classic series, with simple, old-style instrumentalisation in what would otherwise be big action sequences, and a rare lack of reliance on the classic themes.
The coolest thing, though, is that they do use Beastie Boys and it works. It’s part of a bigger sequence, but having it blaring out as Bones calls it classical music – one of many nods to changing times – will have a big grin on your face.
Just make sure you rush out of the cinema after the main opening credits so you don’t have to listen to Rhianna’s again.
