Star Wars: 10 Side Characters Who Totally Stole Their Scenes
6. Bib Fortuna - Return Of The Jedi (1983)
Return of the Jedi is something of a divisive entry in the Star Wars canon, but almost everyone agrees that its first act is among the strongest of any Star Wars film. It seemed like Lucasfilm's creative team took the Tatooine sequence as a challenge to be as creative as possible with the inhabitants of this crime ridden bucket of sand.
Take R2-D2 & C3-PO's entrance to Jabba's palace. As soon as the gate opens they are greeted by a host of bizarre creatures that guard the slug crime lord. The one that makes the biggest impression is Bib Fortuna, who seems like what would happen if you took a sycophantic underboss out of a gritty gangster drama and slapped him in some robes and put tentacles on his head.
He sets an immediate expectation: If this is what Jabba's Lieutenant is like, Jabba himself must be absolutely terrifying. And once we get introduced to the slug kingpin, we get a great sequence of Luke emasculating Bib Fottuna with a Jedi Mind Trick. It's some truly brilliant stuff.
