Star Wars: 10 Things Everyone Gets Wrong About The Prequels

2. The Saga Doesn't Work As One Story

In terms of how they connected with the Original Trilogy, the Star Wars Prequels were… you know what, let’s be nice and call it a mixed bag. Because they were written with the idea that everyone knows the major beats of the Original Trilogy, there are scenes that don’t work well over all six movies like the “I am your father” revelation. But there are plenty of other moments where it actually flows pretty well.

Originally, the scenes where characters like Owen and Yoda are worried about Luke being like Anakin were foreshadowing and created a sense of mystery. But with the Prequels, they’re reframed because we know the reason for their fears. What the scene loses in foreshadowing, it gains in emotional resonance.

But what really benefits is some of the bigger moments. Those really key scenes like Obi-Wan’s death or Anakin’s redemption gain a huge amount of meaning because of the build-up in the Prequels. In the Original Trilogy, we are only told that there is good in Vader. When watching all six movies, we actually see it. Which gives his character arc more depth.

While the saga doesn’t exactly flow completely seamlessly from The Phantom Menace through Return Of The Jedi, the Prequels definitely make things feel a lot richer for the most part.
