Star Wars: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Darth Vader's Suit

9. An Original Suit Failed To Sell At Auction

You'd think that anyone would want to own an original, authentic Darth Vader costume, given the chance. But in 2010, one of the suits used in Episode V simply couldn't attract an owner at auction.

Thought to have been made for The Empire Strikes Back, the costume - which was complete, including the armour and the mask - started with a reserve price of around £160,000 (and was expected to go for as much as £230,000), but bidding stopped at £10,000 short of this figure.

When compared to other popular Star Wars props, that's pocket change too. An R2-D2 droid used in the original trilogy sold for nearly $3 million in 2017, along with Luke Skywalker's lightsaber at $450,000.

This is a very sad story, because a real Vader suit would've made for one hell of a Halloween costume. What a missed opportunity, rich Star Wars fans!

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
