5. Understanding The Force

That’s not how the force works - Han Solo, The Force Awakens. And also many other Star Wars fans to Rian Johnson after The Last Jedi with people absolutely livid at the way Luke Skywalker was able to face down the entire First Order, and not really be there. The decision to expand the audiences’ knowledge of the ancient power was divisive, to say the least.

Yet a second watch makes you understand everything a lot better. Particularly the force. Early on in The Last Jedi, when Rey and Kylo Ren are communicating to each other, Ben Solo turns to the Jakku scavenger and tells her the very strain of the connection should be enough to kill her. In true Star Wars fashion, however, things move on very quickly and you can be forgiven for missing just how crucial that scene is.

Because it adds an extra layer of emotion to Luke’s death. Some cinemagoers were fuming at the lack of explanation as to how Skywalker died. But soaking this scene in explains it perfectly and demonstrates just how big a sacrifice he makes in order to save his friends and make up for not acting sooner.

Sport and Film. I love them both. And I'm extremely lucky to write about two of my biggest passions in life. Most of the time, I'm at the Daily Express newspaper writing about football, tennis and F1. But, when I'm out of there, I let my imagination run wild and pen down my thoughts on the film series' I love. WhatCulture gives me the chance to write about the movie industry - an industry I really care about. And for that, I'm extremely grateful. And hope you, if you're reading this, enjoy what I think about stuff.
