Star Wars: 20 Worst Franchise Moments (So Far)
15. CGI Resurrections
Film: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Despite all the problems with characterization, the biggest mistake Rogue One made were these creepy CGI recreations.
Peter Cushing, who died in 1994, had his likeness used in Rogue One with Guy Henry portraying him through motion-capture and also voicing the character. The young version of Princess Leia was portrayed through motion-capture by Ingvild Delia while audio archive footage was apparently used for Leia's sole line in the film (it sounds nothing like Carrie Fisher though). Why did the production team not just get lookalike actors? Nobody knows.
Grand Moff Tarkin is nothing but creepy from the off and falls straight into the Uncanny Valley. Guy Henry did a fantastic job at mimicking Cushing's voice and this shouldn't be ignored, but Tarkin in Rogue One is a reminder of the perils of motion capture more than anything else.
As for Leia at the end, she's even worse. She looks even more artificial and the final line of the film - "Hope" is utterly, utterly cringe-inducing and corny. Coming right after the incredible Darth Vader scene, this will unfortunately leave a sour taste in the mouths of many viewers as the film ends.
