3. Snoke Wanted To Kill Kylo Ren For His Starkiller Base Failings

The Snoke-Ben Solo relationship is a fascinating one and, in the Last Jedi, went down a path that few envisaged. Fans of the Force Awakens already knew the duo did not always see eye to eye but Kylo Ren’s decision to cut down his master was one few thought he had the bottle to even try and attempt.

Because earlier on in the film, Snoke absolutely rips into his apprentice. He labels him a child in the mask, furious at his failure to be more like grandfather Darth Vader and even more angry at his failure to kill off Rey on Starkiller Base. Kylo snaps, lunging at his master, but his thrown back by a wave of force lightning that brings him, literally, crashing back down to earth.

In The Last Jedi’s official novel, we learn more about Snoke’s fury. We discover he contemplates murdering Kylo for his inability to beat Rey, even though he considers the son of Han Solo and Leia to be capable of greatness. There is even a scene where Snoke wipes a tear from Kylo in a creepy way, loathing him for his weakness and soft heart.

Unfortunately for Snoke, though, Kylo beats him to it. The last Skywalker manages to trick his master and cuts him down in the throne room to save Rey. Probably a good thing because it could so easily have been the other way around…
