Star Wars: 7 Ways Episodes 8 And 9 Could Actually Improve The Prequels
1. Reference The Jedi's Mistakes From The Prequel Trilogy
The Jedi's role in the prequel trilogy should be heavily referenced in Episode VIII because much of what the fans know about the order comes from those films. There were very few of them still around in the original trilogy.
Luke's motivation for disbanding the Jedi is no doubt partially connected to the flaws of its dogmatic ideology, and those certainly come into play in Episodes I, II and III.
Denying Anakin the chance to have meaningful relationships played a part in his downfall, but the Jedi Order as a whole was depicted as arrogant, and blindly subservient to the Old Republic in the prequels. A flawed organisation which allowed the Empire and the Sith to rise under its very nose.
The Jedi failed to prevent conflict from engulfing the galaxy during the Clone Wars and the events which followed, and their decision to take leadership roles on the battlefield only helped Darth Sidious executive his plan to take them out.
Only because of what is known about the Jedi from the prequels does Luke's decision to disband the order sound like a logical one, and Episode VIII could make these films more relevant by using their lore to help justify Skywalker's contentious decision.
