Star Wars: Episode 8 - 10 Major Twists That Could Shake The Galaxy

4. The Jedi Order Was Corrupt

From what Han Solo told Rey and Finn during Star Wars: The Force Awakens, audiences know that Luke went looking for the first Jedi temple after his training academy went t*ts-up and all-but-one of his pupils ended up dead. But then what happened? What did Luke find that stopped him in his tracks and made him decide to never come back to civilisation and set things straight? It must have been something pretty dark, right?

Luke has trusted in the Jedi Order and believed in the Force ever since Obi-Wan first introduced him to the concepts during A New Hope. Therefore, it€™d be a crushing blow to Luke€™s confidence if he found out €“ through his research of ancient Jedi at the original temple €“ that the Jedi weren€™t actually the righteous heroes he idolised them as.

In terms of real-life parallels, it€™d be like a priest putting all their faith in a huge Church, only to find out they it was a hugely corrupt institution that covered up heinous crimes in order to maintain power. Maybe Luke found some evidence to suggest that the original Jedi Order was corrupt and evil, which would surely shake him to his core.

Perhaps discovering this Spotlight-sized cover-up was the final nail in the coffin of his faith, and Luke then couldn€™t bring himself to return to normal life. This may also make viewers look at the prequels in a dark new light, which could be interesting.
