Star Wars: Episode IX - 9 Reasons JJ Abrams Is The Right Choice To Direct

1. He Started This Story, So Is Best Placed To Finish It

Abrams wasn't just a director on The Force Awakens - he was also a writer and a producer. He had a level of creative input which allowed him to do virtually anything, and he helped set up Rey, Finn, Poe, and others, starting them out on the journey that Rian Johnson will now continue.

And that's a very important point. Abrams was there at the beginning. While making The Force Awakens, he'll surely have had several ideas as to where this was all headed. And now, he's returning to the franchise, and can pull all these pieces - pieces that he made - together.

Imagine if another director were making Episode IX. The movie might feel a little disconnected, a little unsatisfying. The only person who knows what Abrams originally had in mind for these characters is Abrams himself; his hiring will make the entire trilogy feel more cohesive.

And that's a critical feeling when we're dealing with episodic storytelling. The prequels were bad and there's no getting around that, but each movie feels like an important piece of a bigger puzzle, and that's because George Lucas made all three of them.

It's okay to not like Abrams as a director, but The Force Awakens set up a story, creating a tone and a feel for these new movies. Getting Abrams to finish what he started only means that the sequel trilogy will end as purposefully as it began.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
