Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 10 Spoilers From The Concept Art
5. Pimp My Lightsaber
A Jedi lightsaber is perhaps the most defining aspect of each individual warrior in the films. In the prequels, Samuel L. Jackson famously asked George Lucas for his character Mace Windu to be given a purple lightsaber so that his character was memorable. Well that and it's Jackson's favourite colour. Darth Maul is exactly the same in this regard: the double-baled lightsaber that the Sith apprentice wielded in The Phantom Menace has helped to keep the character a memorable one beyond just his distinguishing looks. Both of the hilts pictured above look rather old and used by design - perhaps another example of Abrams wanting to capture the look of the original films - but they also look rather sinister just in their general shape. Pointy ends and red lights are extremely evocative of the Sith, so these could very well be mock-ups of the lightsabers used by the new bad guys. Although no sign of any cross-bars here.
