Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 11 Reasons It's Awesome
7. The Tone Is Perfect
Much like Empire, The Last Jedi has a much darker tone than its predecessor, doubling down on brutal violence, both physically and emotionally, to searing dramatic effect.
However, what differentiates The Last Jedi from Empire is that it's also a surprisingly silly film at times, peppering goofy one-lines and sight gags in-between all that seriousness to ensure it never gets too bleak or grim.
Johnson knows just when to dole out comic relief and when not to: this isn't a Marvel situation where the comedy ends up detracting from any sense of threat. Rather, the film finds a fantastic meeting point where the uproarious laughs and harsh violence can co-exist without clashing awkwardly.
It's an incredibly tough balance to strike, but Johnson makes it look easy.
