6. They Plan To Strike While The First Order Is Weak
The First Order suffered a crippling blow at the end of The Force Awakens. Their superweapon was destroyed, killing thousands of their men along with it.
They'll be scrambling to regroup, struggling to rebuild. They'll be the weakest they've been in years, and this is when the Resistance will strike.
The plan involves discovering the whereabouts of Kylo Ren, Snoke and Hux - the heart of the operation. There are countless ways our heroes could do this - intercepting an enemy ship or transmission, or perhaps some Resistance pilots tailed Kylo/Hux after they fled the exploding Starkiller Base.
Their location is eventually determined, but it's decided that this attack should be stealthy rather than guns blazing, just in case the First Order is stronger than they seem.
Luke, Rey, Finn (recently healed), Poe and a handful of Resistance soldiers head off to the location - a facility, on a brand-new planet.
Once they arrive, they split up. Rey and Luke head inside the facility, since they can, you know, control guards by talking to them, while Poe and Finn disable shields/anti-aircraft guns, or run some other kind of support mission. The other fighters wait by the ship, ready for a quick getaway.
