Kicking off the top ten is The Color Purple, a deeply troubling coming-of-age drama based on Alice Walker's timeless Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.

Telling the story of Celie Harris (Desreta Jackson and Whoopi Goldberg), the film focuses on the trials and hardships suffered by African-American women in the early 1900s.

Creating a epic tale out of tragedy, hope, and some beautiful sets, The Color Purple sees Spielberg backing off from the blockbusters that had characterised his career until then, proving his worth as a multi-talented directed not comfortable sticking to just one genre.

From the powerful imagery found in Celie's tale to the staggering performances of Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and a terrifying Danny Glover, it's one of the director's most heartbreaking, joyous and moving works, and deserves to be seen more than once.
