Suicide Squad: 8 Ways Enchantress Is Way Worse Than Leto's Joker

7. The Issue Of Eastern Fear

In the comics, Enchantress looks at times like your usual run of the mill Halloween witch, crossed with Robin Hood. Even when she's in her "sexier" costumes (i.e. the ones that show off more of her midriff), she doesn't really have any recognisable religious denomination. She's just a bog standard enchantress (as emphasised by the fact that her transformation is achieved by saying "enchantress" rather than something mystical sounding like "Shazam!"). So, why exactly have they reinvented the character with a distinctly Eastern flavour? From what we've been told about the origins of the character, June Moone (a nice and silly comic book name) stumbles upon the demon that possesses her in a cave - in the comics it's in a forgotten chamber in a castle. In neither case does it necessarily suggest that these locations need to be anywhere specific: that's the benefit of creepy places, they defy national boundaries and stereotypes. But that's not quite the case here is it? From the sickle moon headdress to the lines on her face that look like henna, the wide neckpiece and the patterns, everything about her outfit looks like it's been influenced in the East. If you were cynical, you might suggest there's something dangerous about the way her creepiness seems to be being reinforced with her change from lighter haired June Moone to dark haired, Eastern influenced Enchantress.
