Sundance 2022: 20 Films You Need To Know About
6. Good Luck To You, Leo Grande
The second big crowd-pleaser to make waves at Sundance was Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, a dramedy starring Emma Thompson as Nancy, a middle-aged widow who hires a male escort, the titular Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack), in the hope of harnessing the sexual agency she lacked in her marriage.
Far more emotionally perceptive than its potentially wacky setup might suggest, Sophie Hyde's film is first and foremost powered by the terrific chemistry between a brilliant Thompson - who gives audiences quite the eyeful indeed here - and co-star McCormack.
Their fond dynamic is always entirely convincing, and comedian Katy Brand's script sidesteps more than a few of the expected genre cliches.
A feel-good film that's also emotionally intelligent and well-rounded, expect Good Luck to You, Leo Grande to be quite the hit when it lands on Hulu later this year, with an awards campaign reportedly in the works for Thompson.
