Sundance 2022: 20 Films You Need To Know About
7. God's Country
Thandiwe Newton gives perhaps the best performance of her career in God's Country, playing Sandra, a college professor grieving her mother's recent death, and who comes to blows with two white hunters trespassing on her property.
Beautifully filmed by director Julian Higgins, this severe dramatic thriller has much to say about the ways in which people of colour have their concerns downplayed and marginalised by white society, embodied by Newton's brilliant performance, filled with a slow-boiling, white-hot rage throughout.
While perhaps a bit too spare for some tastes, those who strap in and get on its wavelength will find an uncommonly rewarding and unsettling thriller that feels so brutally rooted in the real issues of today.
